Signing an online petition can make a student feel involved in a cause very quickly. It takes less than a minute, and the confirmation email feels like proof that something was done.

Petitions are not useless. They can show public support, spread information, and help people discover an issue. For students who are shy or busy, they can be a first step into civic life.

The problem is when the first step becomes the only step. Clicking a button is easier than learning the issue, contacting decision-makers, volunteering, or changing personal habits. Sometimes we collect causes like badges without knowing much about them.

Schools can help by teaching students how movements actually create change. A petition should connect to research, organizing, communication, and follow-up.

Caring about something online is still caring. But if our activism ends after one click, we may be confusing awareness with responsibility.
