Phone Bans and the Fear of Missing Out

Many schools are considering phone bans, and students usually react like their entire social life is being taken away. I understand that feeling. Phones hold messages, photos, music, schedules, and sometimes comfort.

But it is also true that phones change the classroom. Even when we are not using them, we know they are there. A buzz in a backpack can pull attention away from a teacher, a friend, or our own thoughts.

The hard part is that phone bans treat everyone the same. Some students use phones for translation, health needs, or family responsibilities. Others just scroll because class feels boring.

A better policy would be clear but flexible: phones away during instruction, allowed during breaks, and exceptions handled respectfully. Students also need to practice self-control, not only obey rules.

Maybe the real goal is not to hate phones. It is to remember that attention is something we can lose before we notice.
