Drones: Everyone is shooting them down!

Recently, a drone was shot down by Pakistani military. News came from Islamabad that it had destroyed an Indian UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) across the LOC (Line of Control).

While, People’s Daily, the official newspaper of China reported that the drone which Pakistani military shot down was Chinese and made by Chinese company DJI Phantom 3. A website based in Shanghai called “Observer” also claimed the same.

This incident of drone shooting had cast a shadow on the expected Indo-Pak ties that were expected to have a fresh start.

According to the reports in People’s Daily, the Phantom 3 Advanced is the most powerful, intelligent and accessible drone until now. The cost of each drone is $1200.

The Foreign Secretary of India S. Jaishankar rejected allegations made by Pakistan and said that it was a Chinese drone.

Compare this with an incident in the US on November 28, 2014. Brett McBray of Modesto, California had his son shoot the hexacopter, which he thought was watching their family. Although, McBray thought he did the right thing, this incident ended up costing him a good $850 to Eric Joe who was the owner of the drone. This also serves as a warning for others who shoot down the drones without thinking.

This entire incident was first covered by ArsTechnica which received a chain of e-mails between Joe and McBray after the incident. Joe filed a lawsuit in a small claims court in Stanislaus County and the court ruled in his favor.

And this is not the first incident of drone shooting in US. You can find a hundred of videos on YouTube of people shooting drones. In Colorado, an ordinance was drafted by a man to shoot down the drones in the town.

Why this ill will towards drones? It seems that it is due to security fears that everyone have which has been largely developed by the movies.
