China is Getting Crazy after Bollywood Movies of India
Surprisingly, people in China are getting crazy after Bollywood movies of India. Actor Aamir Khan has been a big hit across China. His film Dangal (wrestling) released in 2017 collected US$193 million. This has surpassed previous records of collection for any foreign language film in China. Secret Superstar, which depicts a story of a 14-year-old Indian Muslim girl becoming a popular singer, has been a big hit after its release in the month of January this year. The movie has surpassed the box office collection of Star Wars: Last Jedi speaking much about the Bollywood movies getting a larger audience in China for quite some time.
Secret Superstar is going to garner revenue of about US$117 million (743 million yuan) as per the estimates provided by Maoyan. Xinhua News Agency of China has written in their editorial that the cultural ties between the two countries need to be extended in other areas such as politics and the economy. By the way, the first Bollywood movie that entered the Chinese movie market was 3 Idiots, which had grossed close to 14 million Yuan in 2011. This movie also featured the actor Aamir Khan.
Parallels can be drawn between Indian and Chinese culture as far as their preference for boys over girls is concerned. In Dangal, a wrestler father does not differentiate between girls and boys and commit himself fully to train his daughter to be a winning wrestler in all major events that include Asian games. The movie has also triggered the debate on feminism in China as females have to work harder for gaining the standing occupied by males in society.
