If You Don’t Sleep Today, It Can Alter Your Genes

There are many reasons why one should go to bed on time. In addition to these, there are new big reasons like diabetes and obesity.

Studies have shown many negative effects of sleep deprivation and sleep loss. But a new study in Sweden reveals that even one night of missed sleep can affect your genes for a long time.

This study points to “clock” genes which are a part of circadian rhythm found in the whole body and act like clocks that synchronize our internal clock in adipose and muscle tissues. If you don’t sleep at night, it can slow our metabolism and it can increase risk of diabetes and obesity.

Clock genes are necessary for controlling how the tissues regulate many metabolic processes and perform this job in time. Some processes are turned on when you are eating during the day and some take place in the night when you fast and your body repairs itself.  When shift workers stay awake at night, they induce a circadian misalignment due to which the internal circadian rhythm gets affected.

A study was conducted on a group of young people who were active and well built. They made sure before the study that they had normal activity which means they had regular food intake and sleep habits.

It was a 2 nights study and during the 2 nights study, the participants were given time to adapt to the new environment before the night of sleep deprivation began. When the samples of fat tissues and blood samples were taken from the abdomen, there was an extreme change in the metabolism of deprived subject.

This is a bad news for shift workers. Also, studies conducted on rats suggest that the rats who were fed at odd times underwent worse complications than those who were fed at normal time. The presence of melatonin has resulted in the shift of circadian rhythms. The use of screen and fluorescent lights has negative effects on sleep deprived.

So, it is recommended that you close the laptop on time and go to bed or you may regret it for many years.
