Problems of Environment in India

There are some major problems that India is facing in the present scenario. These include: Deforestation, Pollution and Wildlife Trade. But India’s population and economy continues to grow and the need to find solutions become more urgent day by day. There is an ever growing list of problems related to environment that need to be addressed.

The more the no of people, the more will be the pressure on natural resources. As the pressure on the natural resources is increasing by the day due to rising economy. This is affecting not only India bu also the rest of the world.

Deforestation

There is a rise in demand for forest-based products in India. As a result of this, deforestation and encroachment in the forests lead to major loss of natural resources.

The total industrial consumption of wood can exceed 70 million m3 per year by the end of the decade while the supply would fall short by an estimated 14 m m3.

The nation will depend greatly on imports in order to meet the rising demand which could result in loss of biodiversity and forests elsewhere.

Edible Oil Consumption

India is a very big consumer of edible oil.It is one of the largest importers of palm oil of the world. 95% of its imports come from Malaysia and Indonesia which result in negative environmental and social problems in the exporting countries.

A major threat to biodiversity and tropical livelihoods is conversion of natural forests for the cultivation of oil palms. In Indonesia and Sumatra, most of the lowland rainforest has largely been lost due to widespread plantation of oil palm and pulp wood.

And this is not the end. The global demand for palm oil is going to increase from 28 million tons to 50 million tons by 2030. So there are very serious environmental concerns that need to be addressed.

Pollution

There is increased competition for water in different sectors like agriculture, industry, drinking, domestic, energy generation and others due to which this precious resource is drying up. Increase in pollution is resulting in destruction of wildlife habitat that lives in water.
